Seventy-five years of success and a bright future were celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 17, when Behlen Mfg. Co. marked its Diamond Anniversary.
A community open house drew hundreds to the worldwide headquarters in Columbus. Friends, families and guests were treated to a tour of the plant and presentations by company, local and state dignitaries. Neb. Gov. Dave Heineman called Behlen “The American success story,” and recognized the work of the Raimondo family, which returned Behlen to local ownership in 1984. “We want to recognize the Raimondo family for what you have done.”
Columbus Mayor Mike Moser said Behlen is the rare company that has a 75-year history, noting that the average age of Fortune 500 companies is 40 years and for smaller companies the average dips to 12.5 years. “We’re very proud to have them here in Columbus,” Moser said.
Behlen CEO and President Phil Raimondo praised the Partners in Progress (employees) for their contributions, noting there are 84 who have been with the company more than 40 years and six with more than 50 years experience.
“We’re really proud of that,” he said. Phil said 2009 and 2010 were not very good years for Behlen, but “we’ve made a lot of progress this year, and the leadership team is very excited about the future.”
He recognized members of the Behlen family, saying “We really, really appreciate you starting this great company, and we can only hope that it’s half as much as you guys were expecting.” Behlen continues to grow it business, and an important part of that is the international market.
Tony Raimondo Jr., Vice Chairman of the Behlen Mfg. Co. Board of Directors, said, sales outside the United States totaled $17 million this year, topping last year’s figure of $11 million, which represents 85 jobs created, primarily in Columbus.
“It is very important to us as we grow and innovate,” he said. Chairman of the Board of Directors and Coach Tony “TR” Raimondo, who led Behlen back to local ownership with Bob Theilen, Dick Casey and the late Steve McGill, thanked all those who have supported Behlen throughout the years and continue to do so.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you all, it’s been a great day,” he said.
